Hello, I'm a beginner and just found my first client to work for on Spec. I'm very excited about it, but the only problem is that this client is very demanding and has me wondering if I should let him go or stick on. I have to write a series of three emails, and he wants them in 24 hours. I know emails are very short, but feel it's not enough time to familiarize myself with the subject and then write some proper copy. Can someone please tell me what is the proper time frame a copywriter should be allowed to work on a project? Is 24 hours a realistic goal?

I don't know if there's a right answer for this, so all I can offer is my 2 cents. I'd ask what the rush is about. It's really better to have ample time to write your copy that try to fit into an artificial time constraint. Three or four weeks may be a little unreasonable to ask for where a couple emails are concerned, but I don't think an extra day or two would bust the bank. Short copy, like an email, is sometimes more difficult to write than long copy. I'd think the client would be happy to give you the extra day or two. In my experience marketing directors have always been accommodating in that regard. Why not express that to the client. If they still insist on a 24 hour deadline, and you don't think you can do a good job in that time, maybe "no thanks" is your best option. Lots of other fish out there... Good luck... Chuck |
